Ben Holmes’ Definition of Freestyle

I don’t physically write anything down before I turn the microphone on to record and play the beat for my first take. I may have bars recorded on my phone throughout the week. I may hear the beat 20 minutes before I transfer it into Pro Tools and come up with a melody for the hook. I may have a topic I want to speak on or a story I’d like to tell. What I am defining as a “freestyle” is that I come up with the majority of the words and the flow of the song as I record it. For example, I record four bars and then mess up, stop, arm a new track and continue where I left off.

Very few of these recordings have been done in one take.
